Ancestral & Transpersonal Healing

Ancestral & Transpersonal Healing

Ancestral and transpersonal healing is the work that reaches beyond the individual self, toward lineage, ancestry, spirit, and the dimensions of experience that mainstream psychology has often dismissed or pathologized. For many people, healing is not only personal. It is connected to where they come from, to the people whose lives made theirs possible, and to a sense of the sacred or the more-than-rational that talk therapy alone has rarely known how to hold. At MLC, we make room for this work for the clients who are reaching for it.

What this work makes room for
  • Ancestral reconnection. Recovering relationship with lineage, including the practices, wisdom, and ways of healing that were carried by the people you come from, and that may have been disrupted through colonization, slavery, forced conversion, migration, or generational disconnection.
  • Intergenerational healing held at a soul level, including the work of tending what was passed down through the line, both the wounds that could not be grieved in their time and the gifts that traveled forward alongside them
  • Transpersonal experience, meaning experiences that move beyond the boundaries of the individual ego: a sense of connection to something larger, encounters with the sacred, intuitive or non-ordinary states, and the felt presence of those who came before
  • Reverence for the more-than-human world, including land, season, and the relationships that many traditions understand as part of a person’s wellbeing
  • The integration of spiritual and energetic dimensions of healing alongside the psychological, for those whose understanding of themselves includes these layers
What we hold honestly

This work asks for particular care and humility. Ancestral and transpersonal traditions belong to specific peoples, lineages, and contexts, and they have too often been extracted, flattened, commodified, or stripped from their origins by Western frameworks looking for something to borrow. We do not do that. We are not here to position ourselves as authorities over your lineage or your spiritual life, and we do not import practices that are not ours to import. Our role is to support your relationship to your own ancestry and your own sense of the sacred, with respect for where it comes from and a clear sense of the limits of our place in it.

We also hold the structural and the spiritual together. The reason a lineage lost its practices is usually not mysterious. It is colonization, slavery, displacement, forced conversion. Honoring ancestral healing includes naming what was done, and to whom, rather than treating the loss as if it simply happened.

What this work can look like at MLC:
  • Supporting reconnection with ancestral, lineage-specific, and Indigenous practices when that is part of what you are reaching for, with respect for their origins
  • Holding intergenerational material at the level of lineage and spirit, not only individual psychology
  • Taking intuitive, non-ordinary, and transpersonal experiences seriously, with curiosity rather than diagnosis
  • Naming the historical and political conditions that disrupted ancestral connection in the first place
  • Integrating this work with parts work, somatic practice, and other approaches, since spirit and body are not separate
  • Following your lead, and the lead of your tradition, your community, and your own inner knowing

The therapists at MLC understand that for many of our clients, healing that does not include lineage and spirit is incomplete. We hold this work with reverence, with humility about what is and is not ours, and with deep respect for the ancestors and traditions that have carried people through, against everything, for generations. For related work, we also hold space for spiritual development and for decolonizing therapy as part of our practice.
